The Bikman penthouse: Story of a life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone driving across Albany’s\u00a0Ellsworth Street Bridge can see there’s a house on\u00a0top of\u00a0the Bikman Building.\u00a0Newcomers wonder why it’s there, and on Facebook someone asked about it a few days ago.\u00a0The short answer is\u00a0that the Bikman family built the house so they could live atop the building they owned. But I went looking for more.<\/p>\n

I checked what I could find online, including the obituary\u00a0of George Yale Bikman, one of the Bikmans’ five chidren, who was 91 when he died on the first day of 2005. Then I visited the Albany Regional Museum and also\u00a0asked\u00a0what the city of Albany had in its collection on historical buildings.\u00a0And at the Waverly Cemetery, which is on my favorite bike route,\u00a0I found the graves\u00a0of the couple who built not just that house but an American life.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0thing I discovered is that the sources don’t agree on much, including when the Bikman Building was built or when the “penthouse” was added on top of the roof. But this much I learned:<\/p>\n

Joseph H. Bikman grew up\u00a0in a\u00a0place\u00a0near Kiev in the Ukraine, and he\u00a0learned\u00a0the tailor’s trade. His\u00a0family along with many others had witnessed and suffered under the repeated anti-Jewish pogroms of Tsarist Russia. So in about 1910, young Bikman took off for America. He must have been around 23. First he set up in Coos Bay, but soon he moved to Albany. He also sent word back home\u00a0for Anna to join him, and she did.<\/p>\n

One source says Bikman built the building at First and Ellsworth to house\u00a0his clothing store. Another says it was built in 1912 to house Woolworth’s. Yet another says it was built for Woolworth’s in 1924. One of the couple’s granddaughters understands that her grandparents added\u00a0the penthouse in about 1926, and they and their five children lived there. But in one of the “Remembering When” books published by the late Bob Potts, photos of the building purporting to be from 1926 and 1928 show no penthouse on the roof.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0an “Ask Us” feature\u00a0in the Sunday Democrat-Herald in 2007, the Bikmans moved elsewhere\u00a0at some point and the penthouse was rented out.\u00a0In 1979, French’s Jewelers leased the building with a stipulation that the house remain vacant for security reasons.\u00a0After Sid and Susan Stevens bought the property in 1992 for their jewelry store, Sid told the paper they had hopes of remodeling the rooftop dwelling and living there some day.<\/p>\n

It hasn’t happened, though. A county assessor’s note from 2000 implied the penthouse was not livable, and there’s been no notation to change its status since.<\/p>\n

Joseph and Anna Bikman, who raised\u00a0their family in that rooftop house, must have been quite accomplished not just in life but in business as well.\u00a0In 1918, according to a newsletter of the Lebanon Genealogical Society, the former tailor from Ukraine had bought $3,800 in “war stamps,” an unheard-of amount at the time, to show his love for\u00a0the country where he and Anna had found a new home.
